Create your own Greek Vase!
Posted on Wed, Oct 27, 2010

We love our Greek ancestry and culture which has significantly influenced our culture today. One of those things that has influenced our modern designs is Greek Vase designs… We found this fun project on Archaeological Institute of America’s website and thought we would share it with you…
It’s a great project you can do with your family or class and it can help students step into the ancient Greek world with re-creating Greek Black and Red Figure vase painting and create an image in each artistic style, burnishing clay and using black slip, brushes, and needles. An associated trip to a museum to see the real thing would also help them dive into the ancient culture.
Download the following pdf’s to get started:
~ Everything You Need to Know (Brief Overview)
~ Teachers (Detailed description of the Greek vase Painting Project goals, materials and preparation, class time, pitfalls, and more…)
~ Students (Introduction to Greek vase painting for students, along with step-by-step directions for creating Black Figure and Red Figure tiles, write-up guidelines, and more…)
~ Grading Rubric (grading scale)
~ Resources (books and further research)
We hope you have fun doing this project and learning more about Greek culture together!
